The housing market is broken
In recent decades, the cost of buying a home has risen faster than wages, leaving workers without significant family support priced out of buying a home. As a result, many families are forced into the private sector where rents are eye-wateringly high. I was raised in a low-income family in a council home and I now live in private rented accommodation. I get it! If elected, l will fight on our residents’ behalf and push for new truly affordable homes to be built across our local community.
Labour is building more homes
I am proud to live in Lewisham where our Council is committed to delivering affordable homes for people in the borough. Housing is a human right. Everyone deserves a decent home that is secure and affordable, a home where they can put down roots.
Labour is making a difference in Sydenham
Lewisham Homes are close to completing the new development on Silverdale. This will provide six new social homes.
Planning permission has been granted to a new development on Brasted Close. This will provide 11 permanently affordable homes. These properties will be for discounted market sale with the price of the property linked to the average local wage.
The Council is also consulting residents on the development of the Elderton Road garage site into new social homes.
Every new social home will go to some of the thousands of families on the Council’s waiting list, with many currently living in overcrowded temporary accommodation. The Council is committed to delivering 1,000 additional social homes by 2022.
